Author: R. J. Palacio
Genre: Realistic Fiction / Social Issues (disabilities, differences)
Summary: Wonder follows a fifth grade boy, August (Auggie) Pullman, attending a traditional school for the first time. A facial deformity has kept him in and out of hospitals for much of his young life. The book begins from Auggie's point of view, but quickly switches to the perspectives: his classmates, his sister, her boyfriend, and others. Wonder follows Auggie's difficult fifth grade school year and the community's struggle with empathy, compassion, and acceptance.
Greats: Wonder is a thoughtful novel with a heartfelt message to all. Each narrator has a distinct voice and perspective.
Gripes: Wonder was a wonderful book. However, the ending felt a little rushed. I didn't want this book to end. Additionally, the point of view of the narrators wasn't balanced in the storytelling. I would have liked to hear more from the perspective of the sister and especially her boyfriend.
Rating: 9 out of 10 - This is a must read!
