Title: Books of Ember (series)
Author: Jeanne DuPeau
Genre: Fantasy
Summary: The four book series begins with The City of Ember, the story of a boy and girl (Doon and Lina) and their failing underground city. The series continues with the sequel, The People of Sparks, and prequel, The Prophet of Yonwood, and concluded with The Diamond of Darkhold. The series takes place after a event that destroyed much of the world we know today. We follow their journey to rebuild a new world of peace and hope.
Greats: The City of Ember and The People of Sparks were my favorite two books of the series. The characters are ordinary kids who work to save their community. The books are fast paced and a cliffhanger at the end of each chapter.
Gripes: The last two books of the series weren't as adventurous or exciting as the firs two, but still an enjoyable read.
Rating: 8 out of 10

Author: Kate DiCamillo
Genre: Fantasy
Summary: The Magician's Elephant tells the story of an orphaned boy named Peter who is told by a fortune teller that his sister, who he thought was dead, is alive. In a quest to find his sister, Peter meets many unique characters, including an elephant that fell from the sky during a Magician's performance that injured Madam LaVaughn. In the end, Peter, and all the characters, learn an important lesson of friendship, love and family.
Greats: The story is a simple one with a wonderful morale or life lesson at the end. The characters are very unique, unlike any other characters in Kate DiCamillo books.
Gripes: Some of the characters are difficult to relate to because of their uniqueness. Additionally, the story is told using many difficult, elaborate words. If you want to expand your vocabulary, this is the book to read!
